It runs freely on a sealed, permanently lubricated deep-groove ball bearing in a plastic body and keeps the belt on track and under tension so it does not flutter, does not jump off and runs with constant preload. As a wear part, a rough- or dry-running bearing leads to grinding and whistling noises in the belt drive; in the final stage the pulley seizes and destroys the belt.
