BMW F30 F20 Rear Window Regulator Switch Defective? 9208107
Share
The window regulator switch in the rear door is one of the components that is operated often in everyday use – by children, passengers and when airing out the car. After a few years it responds only sporadically, the window stops halfway or no longer moves at all. Many owners first suspect a faulty motor. This guide shows how you can narrow down the switch as the cause with little effort and which replacement part fits.
Symptoms
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Rear right window does not respond at the door switch, but does via the driver's switch | Window regulator switch in the rear door defective |
| Switch only works with repeated or firm pressing | Worn or dirty contacts in the switch |
| Window moves in one direction only | One contact track of the switch not working |
| Switch rocker wobbles, sticks or is broken | Mechanical damage to the switch |
| Window responds to neither the door switch nor the driver's switch | Different cause: window motor, regulator, broken wire in the door wiring boot, or control unit. The principle of narrowing it down is shown in our guide on the Door control unit (example Mercedes CLK W209) |
Causes
Inside the switch, small contact surfaces operate and switch with every actuation. Over time these surfaces wear down, oxidize or get dirty from dust and moisture that enters via the door panel. Spilled drinks and cleaning agents accelerate the process. Mechanical wear on the rocker and the detents adds to it. Since the rear switches are used less often than the driver's switch, a defect often goes unnoticed for a long time – for example, when passengers can no longer open the window.
Testing it yourself
- Check the window lock button: Check on the driver's switch whether the lock for the rear window regulators is active. This is the cheapest case – and costs nothing.
- Cross-check from the driver's seat: If the window can be moved from the driver's switch, the motor and regulator are working. The fault is then very likely in the door switch.
- Visual inspection: Carefully pry the switch out of the trim and check for dirt, moisture or corroded plug contacts.
- Check the connector: Unplug the connector, clean the contacts and plug it back in firmly. If that does not help, the defect is in the switch itself.
- Swap test: If you have a matching switch at hand, try it in as a test. If the window works with it, the cause is clear.
