The K-Jetronic is the mechanical fuel injection system used in many classic-era Mercedes petrol engines – and it works on a principle where the quality of individual components remains constantly noticeable. One of them is the fuel accumulator: it maintains system pressure in the fuel circuit when the engine is switched off. If it's faulty, this shows up in a very characteristic way – one that initially leaves many drivers puzzled.

Symptoms: How to recognize a faulty fuel accumulator

The key symptom is clear – and can be easily distinguished from other cold-start problems:

  • After a short stop, the engine starts without issue – if you stop briefly at a petrol station, the engine starts right away when you restart it.
  • After standing for a long time, prolonged cranking – if the vehicle stands for several hours or overnight, the engine has to crank for a long time before it starts.
  • No other abnormalities – the problem only appears when starting after standing for a longer period.

This pattern is the decisive clue: it's not that the engine fundamentally starts poorly cold in general, but that it only causes trouble after standing for a longer period.

Cause: What happens inside the accumulator

The fuel accumulator sits in the K-Jetronic fuel circuit and its job is to maintain system pressure for a certain time even after the engine has been switched off. This means sufficient pressure is immediately available at the next start – the engine starts without prolonged cranking.

If a small crack forms in the accumulator, the pressure slowly leaks away while the vehicle is standing. After a short stop, enough residual pressure remains for a smooth start. After several hours of standing, however, the pressure has dropped – pressure has to build up again at the next start, which explains the prolonged cranking.

Diagnosis: have the accumulator tested

Reliably assessing the accumulator requires suitable test equipment. In our workshop, we use our own test device specifically for this diagnosis – so a faulty accumulator can be reliably confirmed or ruled out.

Important: poor cold starting alone isn't a clear-cut symptom of an accumulator fault. If the engine also starts poorly even after only standing briefly, the cold start valve should also be considered as a cause. Solution: replace with a matching accumulator

The typical sign is poor cold starting only after standing for a longer period – for example after standing overnight. If the engine only had to wait briefly, on the other hand, it starts without problems. This pattern distinguishes an accumulator fault from other causes of poor cold starting.

Why does the engine start well after a short stop, but poorly after standing for a long time?

An intact accumulator maintains fuel pressure in the system even when the engine is switched off. If the accumulator has a small crack, this pressure slowly leaks away. Could the cold start valve also be to blame?

Yes, poor cold starting can also indicate a faulty cold start valve. The difference: an accumulator fault only shows up after standing for a longer period. With the cold start valve, on the other hand, the symptom of "poor cold starting" isn't as clearly tied to standing time. The cold start valve can be narrowed down with a simple test: disconnect the connector, apply 12 volts – an audible click means the valve is switching correctly. No click indicates a fault.
