Causes

The engine speed test distinguishes the two fault patterns fairly reliably. If the heating warms up as engine speed rises and cools down again at idle, that points to the auxiliary water pump. If the heating instead stays permanently hot or completely cold, regardless of engine speed, the fault is more likely in the valve part.
Can I keep driving with a faulty auxiliary water pump?
