Causes

The control unit is a plug-in module from the early days of vehicle electronics: a circuit board, relay contacts, and a handful of components in a plastic housing. All three assemblies age, regardless of mileage.

Most often it's the solder joints. Temperature changes and vibration work on the circuit board over decades until a solder joint develops a hairline crack. The contact still exists then – but no longer reliably. That's where the typical "comes and goes" comes from.

The second cause is the contacts: moisture collects behind the dashboard, the silver-plated connector contacts tarnish, and the contact resistance rises. 1. Check the bulb and socket. By far the most common reason for a dead warning light. Take the bulb out, check the filament against the light, inspect the socket for verdigris and loose spring contacts – costs nothing and resolves a good portion of all cases.
2. Check fuses and ground. Pull the fuse out and inspect the contact surfaces on both ends – old fuses corrode at the ends without being blown. Then loosen the ground point, clean it bare, and retighten.
3. Inspect the socket and contacts. Pull off the unit, examine the pins and sockets: green coating, dark discoloration, or widened sockets are evidence enough. Clean the contacts, plug them in firmly, and test again – if the fault disappears, it was the contact, not the unit.
4. Measure the power supply. Use a multimeter against ground to check whether battery voltage is present at the socket with the ignition switched on. If nothing is present, the fault sits in the wiring harness – a new control unit won't change that.
5. Swap test. If voltage is present, the bulb, fuse, ground and contacts are clean, and the fault remains, it's the control unit's turn – a tested replacement unit is the fastest and safest answer here.
