- Observe driving behaviour – If the gauge fluctuates mainly in corners and under braking and acceleration, this points to a worn resistance track: the fuel moves, and the float travels over the worn spot.
- Disconnect the battery – Before working on the sender or especially the instrument cluster, always disconnect the battery first. If a live pin touches ground, a short circuit occurs and the resistors of the fuel gauge burn out – turning a sender problem into a second fault.
- Check the connector – Check the cable and connection at the sender for corrosion, broken wires and a loose fit. A poor ground contact produces the same symptoms as a faulty sender.
- Measure the sender – Measure with a multimeter on the removed sender while slowly moving the float over its entire travel. The resistance value must change smoothly as you do this. Jumps, dropouts, or no continuity at all mean: the sender is faulty.
- Cross-check the gauge – If the instrument still shows implausible values even with an intact, correctly connected sender, the fault lies in the fuel gauge itself. In that case, a new sender won't help – only repairing the instrument will.
