W124 oil pressure gauge faulty? Checking and repairing the oil pressure, fuel and temperature gauges

The oil pressure gauge in the Mercedes W124 reads zero – or the fuel needle no longer moves? In the W124, the oil pressure, fuel and temperature gauges are often housed in one shared unit, the so-called round gauges. A fault in one gauge therefore often affects all three. Before hastily replacing parts, it's worth carefully narrowing down the fault: is it the gauge itself, or is the sender in the engine faulty?

Symptoms: when the gauge draws attention

Typical signs of a fault in the oil pressure, fuel or temperature gauge in the W124:

  • The oil pressure needle stays fixed – with both a warm and a cold engine.
  • The fuel needle stays at zero or shows an incorrect fill level.
  • The temperature gauge no longer responds or swings abruptly.
  • All three gauges act up at the same time – a sign of a shared problem in the gauge unit.

Gauge or sender? Narrowing down the fault

If a gauge is stuck or jumps around, two causes are possible: either the gauge itself or the associated sender or sensor on the engine. Narrowing this down is the crucial first step – replacing both without knowing what's actually faulty is needlessly expensive.

A simple starting point: if several gauges are dead or incorrect at the same time, the unit as a whole or the shared wiring is suspect. If only one gauge is affected, the respective sender may be to blame.

In W124 diesel models (200D, 250D, 300D), the oil pressure, fuel and temperature gauges are housed in a combined unit; documented part numbers from our range are A1245420901 and A1245424701 (VDO). Regarding the display ranges: the oil pressure gauge covers 0–3 bar and in normal operation hovers at about 90% up to the 3-bar mark; the engine temperature gauge reads up to approx. 120 °C. Important for part replacement: fuel gauge and tachometer part numbers are either for petrol or diesel engines – they are not interchangeable with each other, as the part number is fixed to the vehicle type and fuel type. This also applies to the combined unit.

Causes at the gauge: solder joints, circuit traces, plug contacts

If the sender is fine, the fault usually lies in the gauge unit itself. After decades of operation, the following causes are especially common:

  • Cold solder joints: Temperature changes and vibration cause solder joints to crack – the electrical contact is interrupted or unreliable.
  • Cracked circuit traces: Hairline cracks form on the circuit board that open and close during operation – creating the appearance of a jumping needle.
  • Oxidized plug contacts: Corrosion on the connectors increases contact resistance and distorts the reading.
  • Burnt-out resistors: The fuel gauge in particular is prone to burnt-out resistors. A common trigger is improper removal with the battery still connected: if a connector pin touches ground, a short circuit occurs – and the resistors burn out. This is repairable.

This damage is often barely visible and requires targeted diagnosis on the test bench.

Also the clock in the instrument cluster often suffers from the same age-related wear – a further indication that the entire unit should be inspected.

How can I tell whether the gauge or the sender is faulty?

If several gauges in the unit are affected at the same time, this tends to point to a fault in the gauge unit itself. If only one gauge is behaving oddly, the corresponding sender on the engine may be the cause. A reliable diagnosis is made by measuring the removed instrument and testing the sender separately. Is it a problem if the oil pressure gauge is stuck?
