Causes
The instrument clusters of the W124 model series are now thirty to forty years old, and it's less mileage than time that takes its toll on them. Three things keep coming up: first, the solder joints on the circuit board age. Vibration and constant temperature swings in the dashboard cause them to develop microscopic cracks over the years — the contact then only holds sporadically, which explains the typical flickering and needle jumping. Second, the contacts of the connector strip on the back suffer. They sit in the warm, dusty area behind the dashboard carrier and oxidize; if moisture is added, the contact resistance rises so far that the signal no longer gets through cleanly. Third, the mechanical parts of the counter mechanism wear out.
