W124 tachometer faulty? Causes & repair (diesel)
Share
Short answer: If the tachometer in the W124 diesel stays at zero or the needle trembles, leaking capacitors and cold solder joints in the instrument electronics are usually the cause. We repair the tachometer for a fixed price of 60 € – alternatively, we supply the refurbished, function-tested original tachometer A1245420516 for all W124 and S124 diesels.
In the W124 diesel, the tachometer is one of the instruments that tends to cause trouble after more than 30 years: sometimes the needle sits permanently at zero, sometimes it trembles restlessly or drops out only intermittently – and often the small clock in the same instrument stops at the same time. The good news: in most cases the unit's electronics are repairable, and a complete instrument replacement is rarely necessary. This guide shows you how to recognise the fault, what causes lie behind it, and how to identify the correct diesel instrument. Especially important: gasoline and diesel tachometers carry different part numbers and are not interchangeable.

The electric tachometer for W124 and S124 diesels (part number A1245420516): diesel scale 0–6000 rpm without a red zone, with an integrated analogue clock in the dial.
Symptoms: how can you tell a W124 tachometer is faulty?
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Needle stays at zero, no reaction when accelerating | Electronics not working – usually leaking or faulty capacitors |
| Needle trembles, jumps, or shows implausible readings | Cold solder joints – contact keeps briefly breaking |
| Tachometer only drops out intermittently, then works again | Cold solder joints that make contact or not depending on temperature and vibration |
| The small clock in the dial stops or runs incorrectly | Same assembly affected: capacitors and solder joints of the clock electronics |
Causes: why does the tachometer fail in the diesel?
The tachometer in the W124 diesel is an electric instrument: it sits in the right-hand round instrument of the instrument cluster, shows the engine speed from 0–6000 rpm on a diesel scale without a red zone, and additionally carries a small, electrically driven analogue clock in the dial, which is set via a side-mounted adjustment stem. Behind the dial is an electronics board – and that's almost always where the fault lies when there's a failure.
From our workshop experience, there are mainly two classics with the tachometer and clock: Capacitors, which leak or lose their capacitance after decades, and cold solder joints, where the solder joint develops fine cracks through ageing, temperature changes and vibration. A faulty solder joint also explains the typical trembling and sporadic dropouts: depending on temperature and road condition, the connection makes contact – or it doesn't. Incidentally, the same causes are behind a stopped clock, as covered in our article Clock in the Mercedes instrument cluster faulty? in detail.
Testing it yourself: how to narrow down the fault
- Compare symptoms – Observe whether the integrated clock also drops out alongside the tachometer. Both sit on the same unit; if both are affected, this points strongly to the electronics of this assembly.
- Check the remaining instruments – If the speedometer, fuel gauge and temperature gauge work normally, the fault is very likely in the right-hand round instrument itself, not in the power supply of the entire instrument cluster.
- Look at the scale – You can identify the diesel instrument by its 0–6000 rpm scale without a red zone. A scale with a red zone belongs to the gasoline variants.
- Read off the part number – Before replacing it: disconnect the battery, remove the instrument cluster, and compare the part number on the old part with A1245420516, or the notation 124 542 05 16. The unit is inserted from the back of the speedometer. Always disconnect the battery: if a live pin touches ground, a short circuit occurs – and in our experience this burns out the resistors of the fuel gauge in the same instrument cluster.
Solution: fixed-price repair or a refurbished replacement tachometer
For capacitor and solder-joint faults, repair is the most economical route: we replace the faulty capacitors, re-solder the cold joints, and then test the unit's function. The tachometer repair costs a flat 60 €, repairing the integrated clock 40 € – fixed prices, no cost-estimate lottery.
If your unit is badly damaged, or you want the vehicle back together quickly, the refurbished replacement tachometer is the alternative: professionally refurbished and function-tested, needle repainted to original spec, dial clean – only the backing plate shows slight storage and usage marks. You'll find our current stock in our category Tachometer (rev counter), further tested original parts for the model series in the W124 stock. Incidentally: the unit is also suitable for retrofitting in early diesels that were delivered from the factory without a tachometer. Our article gives an overview of other typical instrument failures in this model series The 5 most common problems with Mercedes W201 and W124 speedometers.

Every unit is function-tested before shipping; the needles are repainted to original spec, and the dial is clean.

Important: gasoline and diesel tachometers are not interchangeable. Tachometer part numbers for the Mercedes instrument cluster are basically either for gasoline or for diesel. The diesel tachometer A1245420516 described here shows a diesel-specific scale from 0–6000 rpm without a red zone; the gasoline variant (e.g. A1245420116 for the 260 E and 300 E) has a higher scale with a red zone and is not identical. Anyone who fits the wrong instrument won't get a correct reading for their engine.
- Does not fit: W124 gasoline models such as the 260 E, 300 E, 300 CE and 300 TE – the gasoline variant A1245420116 belongs there.
- Does not fit: W201 (190 D) and other model series – they need their own instrument clusters.
- Does not fit: C124 coupe – no diesel variant exists there.

FAQ
Can I fit the tachometer from a W124 gasoline model into my diesel?
No. The gasoline variant (e.g. A1245420116 for the 260 E and 300 E) has a higher scale with a red zone, while the diesel tachometer A1245420516 has a scale of 0–6000 rpm without a red zone. The two versions are not identical and cannot be swapped for one another.
What does repairing the tachometer cost?
The tachometer repair costs a flat 60 € with us, and repairing the integrated clock costs 40 €. Typical work involves replacing faulty capacitors and re-soldering cold solder joints; the unit's function is then tested.
Does the tachometer A1245420516 also fit the Mercedes 190 (W201)?
No. The W201 (190 D) and other model series need their own instrument clusters. The A1245420516 is intended for the diesel models of the 124 model series – sedan (W124) and wagon (S124).
Why does the small clock in the tachometer stop too?
The analogue clock in the dial is electrically driven and sits on the same unit as the tachometer. For both the clock and the tachometer, the most common faults are leaking or faulty capacitors and cold solder joints – which is why both gauges often fail together.
Can I retrofit a tachometer if my diesel doesn't have one?
Yes. The unit is inserted into the right-hand round instrument from the back of the speedometer and is also suitable for retrofitting in early diesels without a factory tachometer. We're happy to check whether your vehicle is suitable free of charge using your VIN.
