W124 cruise control cutting out? Check control unit A0055450532

Short answer: If the cruise control in the Mercedes W124 cuts out again after 20 to 40 seconds, does not hold the speed or does not accept it at all, the cause is often an aged cruise control unit. On the digital VDO cruise control this is the control unit A 005 545 05 32 with coding part A 007 545 12 32. Replacement is a tested genuine part with renewed capacitors for 289,00 €.

Set the cruise control on the highway, lean back for a moment – and after half a minute the car coasts down without throttle. Or the stalk can be operated, but the speed is not stored at all. Many drivers of a W124 with electric VDO cruise control know this fault pattern. Before you suspect the actuator or the wiring harness, a systematic check is worthwhile: after more than three decades, the control unit is the component where we see the most failures – but there are some cheaper causes you should rule out first.

Symptoms

The control unit compares the speedometer pulses with the stored target speed and then drives the electric actuator on the throttle linkage. This results in typical patterns:

Symptom Likely cause
Cruise control switches off again after 20 to 40 seconds Aged capacitors or cold solder joints in the control unit
Speed is not held, the regulation jerks Control unit regulates incorrectly
Target speed is not accepted, fuse and wiring OK Complete failure of the control unit
Cruise control cuts out, brake light does not light up or stays on permanently Cause at the brake light – the control unit deliberately disengages when braking
Speedometer needle sticks or twitches, cruise control not working Not to be confused with: The control unit is not getting a clean speed signal – see W124 speedometer needle sticks? Replace speedometer

Causes

Inside the control unit there are electrolytic capacitors that dry out over the years and lose capacitance. The result is an unstable internal supply: the unit “forgets” the stored speed, usually after a short control phase. In addition there are cold solder joints, caused by constant temperature changes and vibration, which lead to sporadic failures.

On the W124 the installation position adds to this: the control unit sits under the carpet in the front passenger footwell. Moisture from leaking door seals or wet floor mats attacks connector and circuit board over the years. A look at the housing and connector is therefore part of every diagnosis.

Testing it yourself

Start with the cheapest – you don't need any tools for the first steps.

  1. Check the brake light. The cruise control disengages when braking. Have someone check behind the car whether the brake lights come on and go off cleanly. A faulty brake light signal can interrupt the control.
  2. Watch the speedometer. Does the speedometer needle read steadily and plausibly? Without a clean speed signal the control unit cannot regulate. Also note that the cruise control only works from about 40 km/h.
  3. Check fuse and connector. Check the relevant fuse according to the wiring diagram for your model series, and the connector on the control unit for corrosion or moisture.
  4. Watch the actuator on the throttle linkage. If the linkage moves when you set the cruise control, a command is arriving. If the control then drops out after a short time, that points to the control unit.
  5. Read the part number and do a swap test. Lift the carpet in the front passenger footwell, note the number and – on the digital unit – the coding part. An identical unit with the same number is the most reliable test.

Solution

If the suspicion is confirmed, the control unit is replaced: disconnect the battery, lift the carpet, unplug the connector, fit the replacement unit in the same position. FAQ

Why does the cruise control in the W124 cut out again after a short time?

Typical of an aged control unit: the electrolytic capacitors lose capacitance or solder joints crack, and the unit then loses the stored speed after 20 to 40 seconds. Before that, though, you should check the brake light and speed signal, because the control unit also evaluates both.

Where is the cruise control unit located on the W124?

On the W124 the cruise control unit is in the interior under the carpet in the front passenger footwell. The part number and coding part can also be read there.

Can I swap an analog and a digital cruise control unit for each other?

No. The digital unit A 005 545 05 32 works with a coding part, the analog A 003 545 09 32 without. The two are not directly interchangeable – what counts is the number on your old part.

What is the coding part A 007 545 12 32 for?

The attached coding part defines the vehicle-specific control characteristic of the digital control unit. Therefore compare the control unit number and coding part with your old part.

How much does a tested cruise control unit cost?

The digital control unit A0055450532 with coding part and the analog unit A0035450932 cost 289,00 Euro each. Both are used genuine parts, tested and with renewed capacitors; currently 4 pcs of each are in stock.
