Every Mercedes speedometer has a vehicle-specific part number, that matches the speedometer's top-of-scale value, gear indicator and, above all, the K-value fits. The K-value results from the vehicle, the wheel/tire combination and, primarily, the differential: the instrument is matched to a specific gear ratio. A speedometer with a different K-value therefore doesn't fit – speed and and mileage then run incorrectly. On top of that: on the W201, the odometer is still driven mechanically via the speedometer cable. That's why the simple rule when buying is: read off the part number of the old part and compare it – it stands for the correct combination of top-of-scale value, gear indicator and K-value.
