Condition of this part
New part, originally packaged (NOS) in the sealed Mercedes bag with factory label, label date 09.05.2003. The packaging is slightly age-yellowed, the seal ring itself is unused.
Function and location
The seal ring is a radial shaft seal with garter spring and an additional dust lip. It seals the output of the rear axle differential, keeps the hypoid oil in the axle housing, and keeps out splash water and road salt. The large outer shell additionally acts as a flinger.
The seal ring sits laterally in the rear axle differential, at the point where the axle shaft enters the differential (factory parts catalog: main group rear axle, subgroup rear axle center section). Two pieces are installed per vehicle, one on the left and one on the right – which is why this seal ring is offered as a set of two.
How can you tell if the seal ring is faulty?
- Oil trail on the axle shaft behind the axle housing
- Damp oil film in the area of the rear axle
- With prolonged oil loss: oil shortage in the differential
