Vehicle system and function
The control unit regulates the pre-glow time of the six glow plugs depending on the coolant temperature and switches them via an internal load relay. The glow current is protected by an 80 A strip fuse; via the lamp outputs it controls the pre-glow indicator lamps in the instrument cluster.
Installation location: In the engine bay; the 80 A strip fuse sits under the cap of the control unit.
Condition: Used genuine part (date code 89), white print with circuit diagram partly rubbed off, a cut-off cable stub at the screw terminal, housing dusty with fine scratches.
How to recognize a defective part
- ● No pre-glowing at all, indicator lamp absent (80 A fuse blown)
- ● Glow relay sticks and switches while driving
- ● Indicator lamp fails even though the plugs are glowing

⚠ E30 324d up to 11/1988
The old unit 12 21 1 285 085 is installed there; this unit belongs with the glow plugs 12 23 2 241 389 and an additional wire.
⚠ Not the pulse shaper
12 63 2 241 240 (VDO 2 241 241) is a different part, but is often offered as a glow relay.
⚠ Does not fit:
- E28 524td / 524d
- E34 525td / 525tds and all diesels with M51
- E36, E38, E39
