Condition of this part
New old stock (NOS) in the original Bosch box, manufactured before 1993. The chrome reflector is clean and free of corrosion, the plastic mounting tabs are unbroken, and the H4 socket with spring clip is complete. The original box shows clear storage marks, the edges are bumped, and there is a dealer note on the old tape.
Function and location
The chromed parabolic reflector focuses the light of the H4 dual-filament bulb for low and high beam and projects it onto the road via the lens. The H4 socket with retaining spring clip holds the bulb, and the cable grommet routes the connector to the rear. Dulled or hazy reflector surfaces are the most common cause of weak light on classic cars – the reflector cannot be polished, only replaced. The existing lens continues to be used.
The reflector sits in the right wide-band headlight housing, behind the lens, clicks into place via the plastic tabs in the housing, and is connected to the beam-height adjustment – vacuum-operated on the W123.
How can you tell a reflector is defective?
- Low and high beam are noticeably weaker even though the lens is fine.
- The reflector base shows hazy or dulled patches instead of a clear mirror image when viewed through the lens.
- The light cone appears dimly lit overall because the reflector no longer focuses the light cleanly.
