Condition of this part
New part (NOS – New Old Stock), unused in the original Bosch box. Brass segments bright inside, with no burn marks or pitting, carbon brush unworn, interior coating glossy and undamaged, red silicone leads with no cable imprints, mounting screws with unfitted star washers. Light storage scratches on the top of the cap; the original box shows heavy storage and age damage (torn, split open, soiled).
Function and location
The ignition distributor cap distributes the ignition coil's high-voltage pulse, via the rotating distributor rotor, to the four spark plugs in the correct firing order. The high voltage runs from the centre terminal via the spring-loaded carbon brush to the rotor and from there to four brass segments connected to the four cable outlets. This version is additionally radio-suppressed: a conductive black shielding cap sits over the red-brown, internally coated thermoset body, suppressing the ignition system's high-frequency interference.
The cap sits at the rear end of the cylinder head, on the camshaft-driven distributor of the Volvo four-cylinder engine. It is bolted to the distributor housing with two screws and star washers; the four ignition leads run forward to the spark plugs, and the centre terminal to the ignition coil.
