Condition of this part
Used removed part, uncleaned; a functional test has not been carried out, so function is not guaranteed. The plastic housing is soiled and dusty, with dirt residue sitting in the recesses. The metal mounting lugs and individual Torx screws show greenish-white oxidation. The aluminium back is largely smeared with dried-out grey thermal paste and shows scratches and adhesive residue. A red paint stamp is from the factory inspection. The connector pins are metallically tarnished, but complete and free of verdigris. The housing is free of cracks, there are no signs of burning or scorching, the housing seam is closed, and the vacuum nipple is undamaged.
Function and location
Electronic ignition control unit of the Mercedes EZL: from the signals of the speed and reference mark sensor, throttle valve or idle switch, and the load signal from the integrated vacuum connection, it calculates the ignition timing from a stored map and drives the ignition coil. This eliminates the need for centrifugal and vacuum advance in the distributor.
The control unit is installed in the engine bay on an aluminium heat sink on the side panel, connected via two 4-pin round connectors and a separate ignition coil contact.
How can you tell an ignition control unit is defective?
- The engine starts poorly or no longer starts at all
- Rough idle or misfiring while driving
- Incorrect or fluctuating ignition timing, noticeable as a loss of power
- The engine suddenly cuts out while driving and will not restart

For the same models, at least one second EZL variant exists with the Bosch number 0227400677 or A0085459132 / A0085459232. The units look almost identical – comparing the numbers is essential. Do not confuse with 0227400664 / 007 545 47 32 (230 E and 190 E 2.3) or with 0227400574 / A0055453032 or 0227400571 / A0055452932 – these units have different maps. Separate units apply for six-cylinder engines (M103), e.g. 0227400656, 0227400538, or 0227400583 with the 6 Zyl. marking.
