Function and location
The distributor cap sits as a cover on the ignition distributor and routes the high-voltage pulse passed on by the rotor to the six spark plugs in the correct firing order. The highly insulating thermoset prevents flashovers and leakage currents.
Installation location: On the ignition distributor on the left side of the inline six-cylinder engine M123, below the six spark plug wires and the center terminal to the ignition coil.

Screw contacts, not clamp system – This cap has brass threaded studs for screwed-on spark plug wires. The later M123 version with electronic ignition and clamp system carries Bosch 1235522318 or Mercedes 000 158 40 02 and does not fit here.
Not for M110 – For 280 and 280 E with M110, Bosch 1235522329 and Mercedes 000 158 44 02 apply.
Not for the four-cylinder engines – For 200 and 230 with M115, Bosch 1235522056 or 1235522327 apply. The often-cited number 1235522380 is the M102 cap for W124, W201 and the G-Class, not for the W123 four-cylinder engines.
Catalog error for 000 158 40 02 – The Mercedes number 000 158 40 02 is wrongly assigned to this cap in some catalogs. A 000 158 38 02 is the reliable one.
Does not fit:
- Not for 280 and 280 E with M110
- Not for 200 and 230 with M115
- Not for the later M123 version with clamp contacts
