Condition of this part
New old stock (NOS – New Old Stock), unused in the original Bosch box. Contacts inside bare, no burn marks or tracking marks, carbon brush unused and springs back, thermoset plastic without hairline cracks, brass threaded pins of the seven towers undamaged. The box shows age-related storage patina; the cap itself is in perfect condition.
Function and location
The distributor cap sits as a lid on the ignition distributor and distributes the high-voltage pulse passed on by the rotor arm via the side contacts to the six spark plugs in the correct firing order. The highly insulating thermoset plastic prevents flashover and tracking currents.
It is fitted on the ignition distributor on the left side of the inline six-cylinder M123 engine, under the six spark plug cables plus the center connection to the ignition coil.
How can you tell that a distributor cap is faulty?
- Engine runs rough and jerks
- Ignition misfires, noticeable as stuttering under load

- 250 T, 05/1978 to 08/1982, 103 kW or 95 kW
The Bosch part number of this distributor cap is 1235522224, the corresponding Mercedes part number 000 158 38 02 (version with seven towers and screw contacts).

This cap has screw contacts for the early M123 version. The Mercedes number 000 158 40 02 is incorrectly assigned to this cap in some catalogs – the reliable number for this part is 000 158 38 02. Please compare the number of towers, connection type (screwed rather than clamped) and cap diameter with the old part before buying.

- 280 and 280 E with M110 – Bosch 1235522074 or 1235522329 / Mercedes 000 158 44 02 apply there
- Four-cylinder 200 and 230 with M115 or M102 – e.g. Bosch 1235522380 / Mercedes A 000 158 49 02 there
