Condition of this part
Partial set from old stock in the original red Elring box, Made in Germany. The box bears a felt-tip note "Not complete" and is knocked, the edges rubbed, the label stained.
The factory scope of delivery would be 6 black seals, 6 white PTFE seals and 6 installation sleeves. Actually included are 12 black FPM seals with yellow-chromated sheet-metal casing, 1 white PTFE seal with garter spring and 6 transparent installation sleeves. For a complete cylinder head, 5 additional white PTFE seals (Elring 253.693) are required.
All parts are unused; the rubber seals are clean and elastic with slight signs of storage, the single PTFE seal has an aged, slightly yellowed material. Sold untested.
Function and location
Valve stem seals sit as small collars on the valve guides and limit the amount of oil that reaches the intake or exhaust port along the valve stem. The included transparent installation sleeves are fitted over the valve keyway grooves before sliding the seal on, so their sharp edges do not damage the sealing lip.
Installation location: in the cylinder head, directly on the valve guides under the valve spring retainers – accessible after removing the valve cover, camshaft and valve springs.

The partial set carries the Elring number 316.482. Included are the black seal Elring 316.474 (FPM; inner diameter 13 mm, outer diameter 16.1 mm, height 12 mm, for a 10.2 mm valve stem) and the white seal Elring 253.693 (PTFE with garter spring; inner diameter 12 mm, outer diameter 15 mm, height 13 mm, for a 9 mm valve stem).

The box print covers inline six-cylinder engines only. In addition, this is a partial set with a quantity that differs from the factory standard (see condition) – please check the number of seals you need carefully before buying.
