Condition of this part
New part from old stock (NOS) in the original red-and-silver Elring box, Made in Germany. The box shows clear signs of storage: an overall soiled and grayed label, scratches, crushing and abrasion at the edges and corners – the print, however, remains fully legible. The contents themselves are flawless and unused: 16 FPM sealing rings with dark green sealing lip, garter spring and metal jacket, without cracks or hardening, plus 8 orange installation sleeves. The contents were laid out for the product photos, so the factory seal is no longer present. The part is sold untested.
Function and location
The valve stem seal sits as a miniature shaft seal on the valve guide and wipes the engine oil off the valve stem as it moves up and down. It allows only a defined lubricating film through and prevents oil from being drawn into the combustion chamber or exhaust port.
It is fitted in the cylinder head, pressed onto the guide boss of the valve guide, directly below the lower valve spring retainer – one seal per intake and exhaust valve. The included orange installation sleeves are slipped over the valve stem's keyway grooves before fitting and protect the sealing lip from cuts.
