Condition of this part
New part from old stock (NOS) in the original red Elring box, Made in Germany, printed ASBESTOS-FREE, date code 04/199x. The box shows clear signs of storage: rub marks and paint abrasion on the top, knocked edges and corners, tape residue and a yellowed strip of tape over half the label – the print is faded in places but fully legible. The 12 sealing rings made of brown FPM are unused, with clean sealing lips and visible steel garter spring band, only with some storage dust; plus 6 unused transparent installation sleeves with a red marking ring. This is elastomer around 30 years old; FPM is considered storage-stable, but a residual risk remains with material this old. The part is sold untested.
Function and location
The valve stem seal sits as a miniature shaft seal on the valve guide and wipes the engine oil off the valve stem as it moves up and down. It allows only a defined lubricating film through and prevents oil from being drawn into the combustion chamber or exhaust port. Hardened seals are a classic wear issue on the M103.
It is fitted in the cylinder head on the 12 valve guides (6 intake, 6 exhaust), below the valve spring and spring retainer. Replacement is done with a valve spring compressor with the camshaft or rocker shaft removed; the included installation sleeves protect the sealing lip when sliding it over the keyway grooves.
