Function and location
The control unit controls the heating and ventilation of the interior. The left rotary control adjusts the temperature flap via a Bowden cable, the right one adjusts the air distribution via a second Bowden cable; the middle control switches the four blower speeds. The push buttons operate the rear window heater, the recirculation flap and, if fitted in the vehicle, the air conditioning.
The unit sits in the center console of the dashboard, below the radio slot. Removal is done by pulling off the trim panel and unhooking the two Bowden cables.
How can you tell a defective heater control unit?
- Temperature control no longer responds to the left rotary control
- Air distribution can no longer be adjusted via the right control
- Blower speeds do not switch, or only unreliably
- Rear window heater or recirculation flap can no longer be activated via the button
