New BMW main bearing set Glyco H948/7 in standard size (STD), 14 bearing shells for the BMW inline six-cylinder in numerous models from E21 to Z4.
New part from old stock (NOS) · Made in Germany · All 14 shells unused
Condition of this part
New part from old stock (NOS) in the original red Glyco box, Made in Germany, with a wholesale dispatch sticker dated 24.05.1999. The box shows clear signs of storage: crushed edges, torn lid, broken adhesive seal, yellowed sticker. All 14 shells are unused: the 12 base shells carry the factory dark preservation coating on the steel back, the running surfaces are clean and free of scoring; the 2 flanged bearing shells are bright and shiny with sharp markings. Date codes 02/1998 (base shells) and 05/1997 (flanged bearing). The part is sold untested.
Function and location
The main bearing shells are the plain bearings in which the crankshaft runs in the engine block. Two half-shells each form a bearing point; via a pressure-fed oil film they carry the entire combustion and inertial force and keep the shaft precisely centered. The groove and bore of each shell feed engine oil into the bearing clearance and on to the connecting rod bearings. The one pair of flanged bearings additionally absorbs the axial thrust, thereby limiting the crankshaft's end float when the clutch is engaged.
The shells sit in the bearing bore of the crankcase – one shell in the block, the mating shell in the main bearing cap. The BMW inline six-cylinder has seven bearing points. Installation is only possible with the crankshaft removed or lowered.
How can you tell worn main bearings?
- Low-frequency knocking or rumbling from the engine block, especially on cold start or under load
- Falling oil pressure, as the lubrication clearance in the bearing increases
- Increasing crankshaft end float when engaging the clutch, if the flanged bearing pair is worn
- In advanced stages, metal debris in the engine oil, up to bearing failure

Part numbers: This bearing set carries the Glyco part number H948/7 in standard size (STD) for unground crankshafts with a journal diameter of 59.971–59.990 mm. For ground crankshafts with the undersize stages 0.25 mm and 0.50 mm, different Glyco numbers are required.
⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying
Standard size STD: This bearing set is intended exclusively for unground crankshafts at nominal size (journal diameter 59.971–59.990 mm). For ground crankshafts, the undersize stages 0.25 and 0.50 mm apply – different Glyco numbers are needed for these.
There are also two design variants of this set: one with 1+2 locating lugs and a 180-degree lubrication groove, this one with one lug per shell and a 360-degree lubrication groove. Reliable identification is only possible with the engine removed – if in doubt, please ask before buying or compare with your bearing set.

FAQ
Are the connecting rod bearings included in the scope of delivery?
No. This set comprises only the 14 main bearing shells; connecting rod bearings are not included and must be sourced separately.
Does the set also fit an already ground crankshaft?
No. This bearing set in standard size (STD) is intended exclusively for unground crankshafts at nominal size. For ground crankshafts with the undersize stages 0.25 or 0.50 mm, different Glyco numbers are needed.
How do I know if I have the correct design variant?
There are two versions: one with 1+2 locating lugs and a 180-degree lubrication groove, and this one with one lug per shell and a 360-degree lubrication groove. Reliable identification is only possible with the engine removed – if in doubt, compare with your existing bearing set or ask before buying.
