Condition of this part
New part from old stock (NOS) in the original orange-printed Glyco paper band. The paper is heavily yellowed, creased, torn at the edges, with storage and dust marks as well as tape residue. The bearing shells themselves are as-new: running surfaces smooth and free of scoring with a dark preservation film, with a slight brownish tarnish patina on the parting faces and flange edges. No date code legible, no signs of installation or running, locating lugs and thrust flanges undamaged. Sold untested.
Function and location
The thrust bearing is the only bearing point that, in addition to radial support, absorbs the axial forces via lateral thrust flanges and locates the crankshaft in the longitudinal direction. It absorbs the thrust when disengaging the clutch and limits the crankshaft's end float – a worn thrust bearing leads to wandering crankshaft end float. Undersize shells like these are thicker than standard shells and belong to a crankshaft that was ground down by 1.00 mm in diameter during engine reconditioning.
The bearing is fitted in the crankcase between the crankshaft main bearing journal and the bearing saddle or bearing cap; it accommodates the crankshaft flange and locates the shaft axially against longitudinal movement.
