New part (NOS) in the original iwis box, unused. The chain is open – a master link is not included in the scope of delivery. This is normal for Mercedes oil pump chains and not a defect. The original box shows signs of storage.
Function and location
The chain drives the oil pump positively from the crankshaft. The 46-link version is the most widely fitted Mercedes oil pump chain of the 1990s engine generation: a single-row (simplex) chain of type G 68 WN with a pitch of 3/8 × 7/32 inch, 46 links and a length of around 438 mm.
It is installed in the lower chain drive behind the front cover, between the crankshaft and the oil pump.
How can you tell an oil pump chain is worn?
- Rattling or clattering noise from the lower chain drive
- Fluctuating or falling oil pressure, as the oil pump is no longer driven evenly
- Oil pressure warning light coming on
- In extreme cases, engine damage from oil starvation if the chain breaks or skips

- OM646 – needs 44 links

Does the chain also fit the V8 M113 (e.g. S 500, E 430)?
No. The V8 versions of the M112/M113 (CLK 430, E 430, S 430, S 500) need a chain with 48 links instead of 46.
How does this chain differ from the version for the M103 or OM601 to OM603?
These engines need a chain with 52 links instead of 46. Please compare the link count with the old part before buying.
