Function and location
The timing chain forms the upper timing drive of the four-cylinder M102. It runs from the crankshaft sprocket via the guide and tensioning rail to the camshaft sprocket and keeps the valve timing in sync; it is tensioned by the hydraulic chain tensioner.
Installation location: behind the front cover at the front of the engine.

The chain also fits the W201 190 and 190 E as well as the T1 Transporter 208, 210, 308, 310 and 510.
The chain carries part number 001 997 55 94 and has 106 links in single-row simplex form. For M102 engines from model year 1989 with a two-row duplex chain (also 106 links), the Mercedes numbers A 002 997 17 94 and A 002 997 03 94 apply – these do not fit this single-row chain.

Single-row (simplex) vs. two-row (duplex) chain – the most critical feature: this chain is a single-row simplex chain and does not fit M102 engines from model year 1989. From 1989, a two-row duplex chain with also 106 links was used (Mercedes numbers A 002 997 17 94 and A 002 997 03 94). Despite the identical link count, the two chain types are not interchangeable – different tooth width and roller shape lead to damage. Be sure to check on the old part or the engine whether a single-row or two-row chain is fitted.
