Function and location
The timing chain is part of the upper timing drive and transmits crankshaft rotation to the camshaft positively; it also drives the oil pump sprocket and the distributor. The M103 is one of the few Mercedes six-cylinders with a single-row simplex timing chain – its successor, the M104, went back to a duplex chain.
It is installed running from the crankshaft, via the guide and tensioning rail, up to the camshaft sprocket in the cylinder head, behind the front cover.

Risk of confusion M102/M103: both use G68 simplex chains with the same pitch, but the M102 needs 106 links. This chain has exactly 96 links and fits only the M103.
Does not fit:
- M102 (needs a 106-link G68 chain instead of 96 links)
- M104, M111 and M112 (duplex timing chains)
- OM601, OM602 and OM603 diesel (duplex timing chains)
- OM651 (this engine's 96-link chain is a different type with thicker pins, not interchangeable)
