Function and location
This double-row bushing chain (duplex) drives the camshaft positively from the crankshaft and keeps valve timing and lift in sync. Compared with a single-row simplex chain, the duplex design doubles the load capacity at the same pitch and stretches less in operation.
The chain is installed in the timing chain case at the front of the engine: it runs continuously over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, is guided by guide rails and kept under tension by the hydraulic chain tensioner.
