New part from old stock (NOS) in the original box. The shells themselves are unused and still foil-wrapped, the box shows age-related signs of storage.
Function and location
Plain bearing shells for the crankshaft main bearings. Between the crankshaft journal and bearing saddle they form the hydrodynamic oil film, absorb gas and inertia forces, and set the bearing clearance. The grooved upper shells with an oil hole pass oil on to the connecting rod bearings; the lower shells are smooth.
The shells sit in the crankcase between the crankshaft and the main bearing caps; the locating tab engages in the groove of the block and cap in each case.
How can you tell worn main bearings?
- Knocking or dull noise from the crankcase, especially at idle or under load changes
- Falling oil pressure, as the hydrodynamic oil film is no longer built up properly
- Increased engine roughness, as gas and inertia forces are no longer absorbed properly
- Metal debris in the engine oil or on the oil filter
- Reduced oil supply to the connecting rod bearings via the oil hole in the upper shells
