Original Land Rover connecting rod bearing set RTC1730 in standard size for the 2.25-liter four-cylinder (gasoline and diesel) in Series II, Series III and Defender.
Factory-new, never fitted · Complete set with 8 bearing shells · Originally sealed in factory foil
Condition of this part
Factory-new, never-fitted original Land Rover bearing set from dealer stock dated 1997. The eight shells are still completely in the original, factory-sealed shrink wrap with an oily yellowish preservation film; running surfaces untouched, without scratches, scoring or fretting corrosion, backs with original STD stamping and a diamond-shaped manufacturer stamp. The green-and-white Genuine Parts box shows age-typical signs of storage: yellowed edges, a slight dent in one corner, picking stickers and a ballpoint-pen hand mark. The dating is documented by release 28/08/1997 and batch V19970828. The part is sold untested.
Function and location
The connecting rod bearing shells are the wear plain bearings between the connecting rods and the crank pins of the crankshaft. They run on an oil pressure film and transfer the piston force to the crankshaft with low wear. These are bi-metal half-shells in standard size, that is, for an unmachined crankshaft at nominal size – for a ground shaft, oversize shells are needed.
They are fitted at the bottom of the engine block, in pairs in the big end of the connecting rod between the rod and the rod cap, on the four crank pins of the crankshaft – accessible after removing the oil pan.
How can you tell a defective connecting rod bearing?
- Knocking or rattling engine noise, especially on load changes
- Falling oil pressure
- Metal debris or shavings in the oil or the oil filter
Compatible vehicles
For vehicle identification, the part number RTC1730 and the crank pin size of 58.72 to 58.74 mm are decisive. These bearing shells fit both the 3-bearing and the 5-bearing crankshaft of the 2.25-liter engines.
Series II and IIA (1958–1971):
- 88 and 109 with 2.25 gasoline and diesel
Series III (1971–1985):
- 88 and 109 with 2.25 gasoline and diesel
Land Rover 110 and 127 (1983–1990):
- Pick-up with 2.25 diesel, engine 10J
Defender 90 and 110 (1983 until the 2.25 was discontinued):
- All models with the 2.25 four-cylinder
Santana (Spanish licensed production):
- Models with engine 10J
The bearing shells carry the part number RTC1730 for standard size (STD), also identifiable by the "STD" stamping on the back and the diamond-shaped manufacturer stamp. Technical data: wall thickness 1.834 mm · width 25.05 mm · crank pin diameter 58.72 to 58.74 mm · bearing bore diameter 62.43 to 62.45 mm · bi-metal with steel back and sliding layer. For ground crankshafts, the oversize numbers RTC173010 (+0.010 inch), RTC173020 (+0.020 inch) and RTC173030 (+0.030 inch) are available.
⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying
These shells are pure standard size STD, intended for an unmachined crankshaft at nominal size. For ground shafts, the oversize numbers RTC173010, RTC173020 and RTC173030 apply – please compare the number of the old part.
Does not fit:
- Main bearings – for these, RTC1729 (3-bearing crankshaft) and RTC2626 (5-bearing crankshaft) apply
- 2.5-liter engines
- 2.6-liter six-cylinder
- Rover V8 engines
