Function and location
The oil pump is a chain-driven gear pump. It draws engine oil from the oil pan through the fitted intake strainer with mesh screen and feeds it under pressure into the lubrication circuit to the crankshaft, camshaft and injection pump. The hex bolt on the pipe elbow seals the integrated pressure relief valve.
Installation location: The pump sits at the front bottom of the crankcase inside the oil pan, bolted to the engine block with its long cast arm, and is driven by its own chain from the crankshaft gear.
How can you tell an oil pump is defective?
- Oil pressure warning light comes on or oil pressure drops noticeably
- Unusual running noises due to insufficient lubrication of the crankshaft and camshaft
- In extreme cases, bearing damage from sustained oil starvation

Part numbers: The pump carries the number LASO 6011800701 (601 180 07 01) for the OM 601 D 23. The passenger-car version of the OM601 with 2.0 litres displacement (OM 601 D 20) uses the different numbers 601 180 01 01 or 601 180 08 01, the five-cylinder OM602 uses number 602 180 30 01, the six-cylinder OM603 uses number 603 180 21 01, and the CDI engine OM611 uses number 601 180 14 01.

This pump is built specifically for the 2.3-litre diesel OM 601 D 23 used in commercial vehicles. The passenger-car versions with the 2.0-litre OM 601 D 20 – such as the 190 D, 200 D or C 200 diesel – use different pump numbers and do not fit.
