Function and location
The control unit evaluates the wheel-speed signals from the ABS sensors and, in the event of wheel slip up to approx. 30 km/h, controls the hydraulic pressure of the multi-plate lock in the rear axle, so the differential can lock up to 100%. This improves traction when pulling away on slippery surfaces.
It is installed in the fuse or relay box – depending on the model series, either in the engine bay or behind the passenger-side trim panel in the footwell.

How can you tell if an ASD control unit is faulty?
- A spinning rear wheel on a slippery surface is no longer braked when pulling away
- The multi-plate lock in the rear axle no longer builds up hydraulic pressure during wheel slip
- The differential no longer locks up to approx. 30 km/h, even though a wheel is spinning

There are several similar ASD control units with different end numbers (including 005 545 51 32, 005 545 55 32, 005 545 05 32, 008 545 24 32, 013 545 01 32, 007 545 77 32). Please compare the number of your old unit 1:1 with 005 545 59 32 before buying.
In addition, the control unit only fits vehicles that were factory-fitted with the ASD special equipment (code 471). Retrofitting without the associated rear axle, hydraulic pump and wiring is not possible.

- Vehicles with ASR (traction control) instead of ASD – this is a different system

Only the end number 005 545 59 32 belongs to this control unit. Similar numbers such as 005 545 51 32 or 005 545 05 32 belong to other control units (including cruise control) and do not fit.
Does the control unit also fit without the ASD special equipment?
No. The vehicle must have been factory-fitted with ASD (code 471); retrofitting without the associated rear axle, hydraulic pump and wiring is not possible.
