Vehicle system and function
In the two-battery system, the N82 battery control unit monitors the main battery in the trunk, the auxiliary battery for the SBC brake and the charging voltage. It controls charging of the auxiliary battery and, on undervoltage, switches off consumers such as the rear window and seat heating in stages.
Installation location: In the trunk on the rear wall of the spare wheel well next to the main battery. The battery ground cable is bolted to the threaded stud of the control unit, the tab leads to the body ground.
Condition: Used genuine part, type plate fully legible (HW 41/04, SW 44/04), label with stains. Stud and ground tab clean, foam padding dirty.
How to recognize a defective part
- ● Red battery warning message in the instrument cluster that returns even with a new battery
- ● Fault memory reports the N82 battery control unit
- ● Battery is discharged overnight
- ● Comfort consumers are switched off due to undervoltage

⚠ Supersedes older numbers
A 211 540 38 45 is the successor number for A 211 540 13 45, 27 45, 42 45 and 69 45 and can replace them.
⚠ Not from the 06/2006 facelift
With the facelift, the SBC brake and auxiliary battery are dropped; other control units are fitted there.
⚠ Not SL R230
The SL R230 has its own battery control unit (A 230 540 10 45).
⚠ Not the auxiliary battery relay in the engine bay
A 002 542 38 19 and A 002 542 64 19 are smaller control units in the engine bay – a different part.
⚠ Does not fit:
- W211 / S211 and CLS C219 from the 06/2006 facelift (e.g. E 550, E 63 AMG, E 420 CDI)
- SL R230
- E-Class W212
