Function and location
The temperature-controlled viscous fan clutch (silicone oil/bimetal) from BEHR engages the fan when the engine is warm and disengages it when the engine is cold. Stamped on it is “BEHR VISCO LÜFTER, Lizenz Schwitzer USA”.
It is fitted at the front of the engine on the water pump flange and carries the fan blade. The clutch is supplied on its own, without the fan blade.
How can you tell a viscous fan clutch is faulty?
- Fan no longer engages reliably when the engine is warm – engine tends to overheat
- Fan no longer disengages when the engine is cold – permanently loud fan operation
- Silicone oil visibly leaks from the clutch
- Hub is stiff due to surface rust
