Condition of this part
New old stock (NOS), uninstalled, in the original Mercedes-Benz parts box. The cast housing shows an even, dark storage patina, the sealing plug has intact yellow zinc plating, and the plunger is bare and without pitting. The box is heavily worn: stained, torn at the bottom and resealed with tape. Only the chain tensioner as pictured is supplied, without a seal. Sold untested, as no test bench is available.
Function and location
The chain tensioner keeps the timing chain between the crankshaft and camshaft permanently under tension. A spring-loaded, oil-damped plunger presses on the tensioner rail and compensates for chain stretch and load changes.
Installation location: It sits on the side of the timing case/cylinder head, screwed in transversely to the chain drive, and acts on the tensioner rail via the plunger. It is sealed with a large hexagon sealing plug with a sealing ring.
How can you tell if the chain tensioner is defective?
- Chain rattle on cold start
- Drifting valve timing due to decreasing tension
- In extreme cases, chain jump with consequential engine damage
