Hydraulic chain tensioner (SWAG 6010500111) for the 2-valve diesel engines OM601, OM602 and OM603 in Mercedes W124, W201, W202, the T1, T2, Sprinter and Vario vans, as well as in the Vito, V-Class and G-Class.

NOS – unused · Original SWAG box, stock date 02/2002 · For 2-valve diesel OM601 / OM602 / OM603

Condition of this part

New old stock (NOS) in the original SWAG box, stock date 02/2002. The component itself is unused, zinc-plated and bright, the sealing ring is fitted, showing only slight storage patina. The box, by contrast, looks used: soiled, knocked at the edges, the label torn and taped over. As no test bench is available, the part is sold untested.

Function and location

The hydraulic chain tensioner keeps the diesel engine's timing chain under constant preload. Via a spring-loaded piston pressurized with engine oil pressure, it presses the tensioner rail against the chain and compensates for chain stretch as well as load changes. A worn or leaking tensioner causes chain rattle on cold start, a chain skipping teeth, and in extreme cases catastrophic engine damage.

The tensioner sits at the rear or side of the cylinder head in the timing case area and is screwed in from outside into the bore next to the chain tunnel. Removal is possible without opening the valve cover.

How can you tell if the chain tensioner is defective?

  • Chain rattle on cold start
  • Rattling noise that eases or disappears entirely after warming up
  • Timing chain skipping or running unevenly
  • In extreme cases, engine damage from a chain jumping teeth
