Function and location
The relay controls the speed-dependent kickdown cutoff of the automatic transmission. Shortly before the maximum engine speed is reached, it interrupts the current to the kickdown solenoid valve so that the transmission shifts up under full throttle.
Located in the relay and control unit box in the engine bay – under the plastic cover on the W124 and W202.
How can you tell a defective kickdown relay?
- The automatic transmission does not shift up under full throttle and stays in gear
- The kickdown function does not work

W124 (automatic transmission, 4-cylinder petrol M111):
- 220 E (124.022)
W202 C-Class (automatic transmission):
- C 220 (202.022)
W210 E-Class (automatic transmission):

This relay carries the number A 003 545 50 05 with the marking "4 Zyl. Kickdown" (4-cyl. kickdown). The six-cylinder version for the M104 is listed under A 003 545 32 05 and, despite the identical design, is not interchangeable. For 4-cylinder diesel engines, A 003 545 83 05 applies. For the kickdown cutoff on the W201, W124 and W463, the numbers A 002 545 65 05 or A 001 545 82 05 are used. The kickdown switch on the accelerator pedal itself carries the number A 004 545 17 14 and is not a relay.

The six-cylinder version for the M104 is listed under A 003 545 32 05 and, despite the identical design, is not interchangeable. For 4-cylinder diesel, A 003 545 83 05 applies. Please compare the marking and number of your old relay 1:1.
