Function and location
Genuine Mercedes-Benz A/C relay, version for 6-cylinder engines with 12 volts, made by Kostal, marked "Klima · 6 Zyl. · 12V". It is more than a simple switching relay – it is a small control unit for the air conditioning system: it switches the magnetic clutch of the A/C compressor while monitoring drive belt slip via a speed comparison between the compressor and engine, protecting the belt and compressor. It also switches off the compressor if the coolant temperature is too high or under full load/kickdown, and delays switch-on after the engine starts.
Installation location: In the relay/electronics compartment in the engine bay behind the starter battery, next to the fuel pump relay.
How can you tell an A/C relay is defective?
- The A/C compressor no longer engages even though the refrigerant and electrics are fine
- Drive belt and compressor protection via speed comparison no longer works
- Shutoff at excessive coolant temperature or under full load/kickdown no longer occurs

The "6 Zyl." marking is the identifying feature – there are several similar Mercedes A/C relays in different versions. If in doubt, compare the part number on your old part.
