Function and location

The engine damper dampens the engine's longitudinal and pitching movements on its rubber mounts and stops the engine from knocking against the mounts under load changes, when starting and when switching off – a noticeable comfort and durability factor on the long-stroke five-cylinder diesel.

It is fitted between the engine mount and the front axle carrier, linked to the side of the engine block.

How can you tell a defective engine damper?

  • Jerking of the engine when accelerating (load change)
  • Dull thud when starting the engine
  • Dull thud when shutting off the engine
  • Visible leak at the damper
