Function and location
The camshaft sprocket transfers the crankshaft's rotary motion to the camshaft via the double-row timing chain, thereby setting the valve timing of the inline-six engine. It sits torque-locked on the camshaft stub via a key and is bolted in place. The six spoke holes serve to reduce weight and aid assembly.
Installation location: At the front of the engine under the timing case cover, on top of the camshaft end in the cylinder head, in mesh with the duplex timing chain.
How can you tell a camshaft sprocket is defective?
- Rattling or clattering timing chain (chain rattle)
- Shifted valve timing of the inline-six engine

The exact part number is decisive. Our sprocket carries the number 180 052 06 01, stamped on the part itself. The four-cylinder Ponton models and the 190 SL use the numbers 121 052 00 01, 121 052 02 01 and 121 052 03 01 – those are different sprockets. Please compare the number of your old sprocket 1:1 and count the teeth.
