Condition of this part
New old stock (NOS), unused in the original SWAG packaging. The teeth show no signs of running; a few storage marks on the hub and spokes are due to storage.
Function and location
The camshaft sprocket sits at the front end of the overhead camshaft and is driven by the crankshaft via a double-row (duplex) timing chain. It transfers the rotary motion at a ratio of two to one, thereby determining the timing of the intake and exhaust valves. In this engine family, the same chain drive also drives the injection pump – so a worn sprocket also shifts its injection timing.
It is fitted at the front of the cylinder head under the timing case cover, bolted to the camshaft flange and in mesh with the duplex timing chain.
How can you tell a camshaft sprocket is defective?
- Rough idle and noticeable loss of power, because the valve timing is no longer correct
- Difficult or irregular cold starts, because the injection pump's timing also shifts along with the sprocket
- Overall uneven running of the engine

This sprocket has 38 teeth. Similar sprockets exist with a different tooth count, including a version with 36 teeth. Please count the teeth of your old sprocket and compare the OE number 601 052 00 01 before buying.

- Sprocket SWAG 10 04 0001 for OE numbers 121 052 00 01 and 121 052 02 01 – the version for M121 (190 SL, Ponton and Fintail)
