New old stock (NOS), unused in the original Mercedes-Benz packaging. The chain is factory-preserved; the box shows storage marks.
Function and location
The double-row roller chain transfers drive force from the crankshaft to the oil pump sprocket, maintaining the engine's lubricating oil pressure. It runs permanently in the oil bath and is a wear part that is renewed during an engine overhaul or timing chain change. A stretched or broken oil pump chain leads to loss of oil pressure.
The installation location is in the front crankcase below the timing chain drive, between the crankshaft sprocket and the oil pump sprocket. Access is gained with the oil pan removed and the vibration damper dismounted.
How can you tell an oil pump chain is defective?
- Oil pressure warning light comes on or flashes
- Noticeable drop in oil pressure, especially at idle
- In extreme cases, engine damage due to insufficient lubrication

The oil pump chain carries the Mercedes-Benz part number A0009978194, also written as 000 997 81 94. Not to be confused with the camshaft timing chain (among others 000 997 31 94 with 186 links), the single-row oil pump chain 000 997 83 94 (48 links, for M116, M117 and M119), or the single-row oil pump chain 003 997 74 94 (46 links, for M102, M104, M111 and the OM 601 family).

This is the chain for the oil pump drive, not a timing chain for the camshaft. Please compare the number of your old chain 1:1 and count the chain links.

No. This is exclusively the double-row chain for the oil pump drive (000 997 81 94). The camshaft timing chain has a different, significantly longer number (among others 000 997 31 94 with 186 links) and is not part of this listing.

No. This part number is not approved for the 240 D with OM 616 or the 300 D naturally aspirated diesel with OM 617.912.
