Function and location
The connecting rod links the piston to the crankshaft and converts the piston's up-and-down motion into the crankshaft's rotary motion. It is a forged steel part: the split big end runs on connecting rod bearing shells on the crank pin, while the small end takes the piston pin via a bronze bushing. On the precombustion-chamber diesels OM 601, OM 602 and OM 603, the connecting rods are weight-classified and installed as a weight-matched set.
Installation location: in the crankcase between piston and crankshaft, accessible only with the engine removed or the oil pan taken off. The connecting rod bolts are stretch bolts and must always be replaced during installation.
