Thermostat with housing (opening temperature 92 °C) for Mercedes W203, W211 and W220 with the inline engines OM646, OM647 and OM648 (CDI), OE number A 646 200 00 15.

NOS – unused in the original box · Fits OM646 / OM647 / OM648 CDI · Opening temperature 92 °C

Condition of this part

NOS (New Old Stock) in the original Calorstat box, unused. The housing has no corrosion or scratches, the sealing ring is unused. The box has slightly knocked edges.

Function and location

The thermostat regulates coolant flow between the small and large circuits. It stays closed up to the opening temperature so the engine warms up quickly; from 92 degrees it opens the path to the radiator. The aluminium housing also acts as a hose manifold and houses the coolant temperature sensor.

The housing is installed at the front of the engine, flange-bolted to the coolant pump and timing case with four screws. The radiator hoses attach to the two large spigots, and the bleed line attaches to the thin nipple.

How can you tell if the thermostat is defective?

  • The engine overheats because the circuit to the radiator is not opened in time (thermostat stuck closed)
  • The engine takes unusually long to warm up because the large circuit opens too early (thermostat stuck open)
  • The cabin heating stays cool because the coolant does not reach operating temperature
  • The coolant temperature sensor in the housing shows unusual or fluctuating readings

Part numbers

OE number A 646 200 00 15, housing stamp V.2890-92. To be distinguished from the externally almost identical 87-degree version TH6847.87J, which belongs to a different number family.

⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying

The opening temperature is decisive: please compare the stamped temperature of the old thermostat, or the OE number, exactly with this part. For six-cylinder applications, also check the OE number, as from 2005 the V6 engine OM642 was fitted with a different thermostat.

Does not fit:

  • Version with 87-degree opening temperature, number TH6847.87J (among others Sprinter, Vito, Viano, Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD)
  • OM651 – the thermostat module is integrated there
  • V6 engine OM642 (3.0-litre CDI)
  • Insert thermostats without housing

FAQ

How does this thermostat differ from the 87-degree version?

In the opening temperature and the number family: this part opens at 92 degrees (housing stamp V.2890-92, OE number A 646 200 00 15). The 87-degree version TH6847.87J belongs to a different number family and is fitted, among others, in the Sprinter, Vito, Viano and the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD.

Does the thermostat also fit the V6 engine OM642?

No. The OM642 (3.0-litre CDI) uses a different thermostat, as does the OM651 with its integrated thermostat module. This part is exclusively for the inline engines OM646, OM647 and OM648.

What condition is the part in?

NOS in the original Calorstat box, unused, housing without corrosion or scratches, sealing ring unused. The box itself has slightly knocked edges.
