Function and location

The overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) protects the control units from voltage spikes above about 22 V and also switches their power supply. Terminal 87E supplies the KE-Jetronic/lambda control and ABS, terminal 87L the idle control unit, terminal 30a provides filtered permanent positive for the fault memory. In the event of overvoltage, the 10 A fuse blows and disconnects the control units instead of letting them be destroyed.

It is installed in the engine bay on the right behind the battery, under the black plastic cover, between the fuel pump relay and the ABS/KE control unit. It is a plug-in relay that can be directly swapped.

The part number listed in this listing is 2015403245 (7-pin version, Stribel, one 10 A fuse). Also important for distinction: the 9-pin version A 201 540 37 45 (two fuses), the identical-looking A 201 540 38 45 (Siemens), which additionally covers W461 and W463, and, to be distinguished from these, the second-generation OVP relay A 000 540 52 45 and A 000 540 67 45 for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993 (one blue 15 A fuse).

⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying

The final digits and pin count are decisive: this is the 7-pin version with one 10 A fuse, not identical to the 9-pin A 201 540 37 45 (two fuses). Please count the pins on your removed relay before buying – a 7-pin relay does not fit a socket for nine contacts.

According to the EPC, this number is not listed for the G-Class (W461/W463); the identical-looking A 201 540 38 45 (Siemens) additionally covers W461 and W463. Also do not confuse this relay with A 000 540 52 45 or A 000 540 67 45 – second-generation OVP relay for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993, identifiable by a blue 15 A fuse. Incorrect installation results in the engine no longer being able to be switched off and the transmission not shifting.

Does not fit:

  • G-Class W461 / W463 (not listed for this part number according to EPC)
  • Complete R129 model series (SL)
  • Complete W202 model series (C-Class)
  • 190 E 2.3-16 / 2.5-16 / 2.5-16 Evolution
  • 300 E-24, 300 CE-24
  • Convertible 200 CE / E 200
  • W124 400 E and 500 E – have no separate overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) at all
