Function and location
The overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) protects the control units from voltage spikes in the electrical system and also switches their power supply. Terminal 87E supplies the KE-Jetronic/lambda control and ABS, terminal 87L the idle control unit, terminal 30a provides filtered permanent positive so the control units retain the fault memory. This 9-pin version has two separately switched relay stages and therefore two dedicated 10 A fuses.
The relay is installed in the engine bay on the right behind the battery, under the black plastic cover, directly next to the ABS and KE control units. It is a plug-in relay that can be directly swapped.
How can you tell if the overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) is faulty?
The cause is usually a cracked solder joint from condensation or a blown fuse; the faults often occur only when warm. Typical symptoms:
- Rough or elevated idle, engine stalls when stopping
- Poor starting behavior, up to a no-start condition
- Jerking and misfires, increased fuel consumption
- ABS and ASD/ASR warning light permanently on
- Fuel pump not working or control unit no longer readable

The part number is A 201 540 37 45 (2015403745). This 9-pin version with two 10 A fuses is the forward-compatible replacement for the older 5-pin and 7-pin predecessor numbers A 201 540 08 45, A 201 540 30 45, A 201 540 32 45 and A 201 540 38 45. Not to be confused with the second-generation OVP relay for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993, part numbers A 000 540 52 45 and A 000 540 67 45, identifiable by a single blue 15 A fuse.
⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying
This 9-pin version has two 10 A fuses and is not identical to the 7-pin part numbers A 201 540 38 45 and A 201 540 32 45 (one fuse each). Please count the pins on your removed relay before buying – the housing shape alone does not tell them apart.
The 9-pin version is a forward-compatible replacement for the 5-pin and 7-pin predecessors, since surplus pins find no mating contact in the old socket; the reverse does not work. Not to be confused with A 000 540 52 45 and A 000 540 67 45 – that is the second-generation OVP relay for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993, identifiable by a blue 15 A fuse. Incorrect installation results in the engine no longer being able to be switched off and the transmission no longer shifting.
Does not fit:
- W124 400 E and 500 E – these models have no separate overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay), the function is integrated in the base module

FAQ
How do I tell the 9-pin version apart from the 7-pin version?
Count the pins on your removed relay: the 9-pin version has two dedicated 10 A fuses, the 7-pin predecessors A 201 540 38 45 and A 201 540 32 45 only one.
Is the relay tested?
Yes, this is a used genuine part that has been function tested; the fuses are intact.
