Function and location
The OVP relay protects the control units from voltage spikes in the vehicle electrical system and at the same time switches their power supply. Terminal 87E supplies KE-Jetronic/lambda control and ABS, terminal 87L the idle control unit, terminal 30a provides filtered permanent positive for the fault memory. As a 7-pin version it has one relay stage and accordingly a 10 A fuse.
Installation location: Engine compartment on the right behind the battery, under the black plastic cover, next to the ABS control unit and fuel pump relay. Plug-in relay, directly replaceable.
How can you tell if the overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) is faulty?
- KE-Jetronic/lambda control and ABS fail because they are no longer supplied via terminal 87E.
- Idle is no longer controlled because the idle control unit no longer receives voltage via terminal 87L.
- The relay's 10 A fuse has blown.

⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying
This is the 7-pin version with ONE 10 A fuse: It is not identical to the 9-pin A 201 540 37 45, which has two fuses. Please count the pins on the removed relay before buying.
Fit compatibility: A 7-pin relay does NOT fit into a socket that uses nine contacts – circuits would be left without supply there. Conversely, the 9-pin A 201 540 37 45 can replace this relay (upward compatible).
Do NOT confuse with A 000 540 52 45 and A 000 540 67 45: Second OVP relay generation for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993, recognizable by ONE blue 15 A fuse. These also partly carry a Siemens imprint; the manufacturer name alone is not enough to identify the correct version. Incorrect installation means the engine cannot be shut off and the transmission does not shift.

- 190 E 2.3-16 / 2.5-16 / 2.5-16 Evolution
- 300 E-24, 300 CE-24
- Convertible 200 CE / E 200
- Complete R129 model series (SL)
- Entire W202 series (C-Class) – the 9-pin version is required for it
- W124 400 E and 500 E – have no separate overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) at all
