Function and location

The overvoltage protection relay (OVP relay) protects the control units from voltage spikes in the electrical system and also switches their power supply. Terminal 87E supplies the KE-Jetronic/lambda control and ABS, terminal 87L the idle control unit, terminal 30a provides filtered permanent positive for the fault memory. As a 7-pin version, this relay has one relay stage and accordingly one 10 A fuse.

It is installed in the engine bay on the right behind the battery, under the black plastic cover, next to the ABS control unit and the fuel pump relay. It is a plug-in relay that can be directly swapped.

The part number listed in this listing is 2015403845 (7-pin version, Siemens, one 10 A fuse). Also important for distinction: the 9-pin version A 201 540 37 45 (two fuses, a forward-compatible replacement for this relay) and, to be distinguished from that, the second-generation OVP relay A 000 540 52 45 and A 000 540 67 45 for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993 (one blue 15 A fuse).

⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying

This is the 7-pin version with one 10 A fuse. It is not identical to the 9-pin version A 201 540 37 45, which has two fuses – please count the pins on your removed relay before buying. A 7-pin relay does not fit a socket with nine contacts; conversely, the 9-pin A 201 540 37 45 is a forward-compatible replacement for this relay.

Also do not confuse this relay with A 000 540 52 45 or A 000 540 67 45 – that is the second-generation OVP relay for the HFM engines M104/M111 from approx. 1993, identifiable by a blue 15 A fuse. These, too, sometimes carry Siemens markings; the manufacturer name alone is no guarantee of fit. Incorrect installation results in the engine no longer being able to be switched off and the transmission not shifting.
