Function and location
The indicator shows the engaged gear of the automatic transmission. Behind the scale sit six bulbs – one each for P, R, N, D, S and L. Depending on the position of the selector lever, the corresponding bulb lights up.
It is installed in the instrument cluster as a narrow illuminated panel below the speedometer, screwed in from the back and accessible only after removing the instrument cluster.

How can you tell a gear position indicator is defective?
- No letter (P R N D S L) lights up anymore, even though the selector lever is moved
- Only individual letters light up, others remain permanently dark

For column shift only: this unit belongs to the automatic with selector lever on the steering column. With the selector lever on the center console, the indicator sits in the shift gate – there it is not applicable at all. Also compare the labeling and part number of your old unit 1:1.
