Function and location
The potentiometer is the brightness control (dimmer) for the instrument lighting. On the W124 and the W463, the entire instrument lighting runs through this single component; after decades, the contacts inside oxidize, causing the connections to develop contact resistance.
The potentiometer sits in the instrument cluster and is simply plugged in – nothing needs to be soldered on the vehicle. Remove the instrument cluster, swap the potentiometer, done; usually a matter of around 20 minutes.
