Function and location
The door lock cylinder is the mechanical locking element of the front door. The flat key turns the cylinder core, which carries along the actuating rod on the back via a driver and pushes the locking lever in the door lock open or closed.
The cylinder is installed in the outer skin of the front door as a separate rectangular trim next to the door handle; from the inside, with the door trim removed, it is held by a clip and threaded sleeve.
How can you tell a lock cylinder is defective?
- Key spins freely without locking or unlocking the door (driver broken)
- Door can no longer be locked or unlocked from outside
- Cylinder sticks or turns only stiffly

Regarding side assignment: in the catalog, left (201 760 05 77 / 201 760 23 77) and right (201 760 06 77) are listed separately. According to professional experience, however, the cylinders can in practice still be swapped between the driver and passenger door.
Does not fit:
- W124 – separate cylinder numbers 124 760 01 77 and 124 760 43 77, right cylinder core only 37.5 mm instead of 44.8 mm
- W123, W126 and R107 – there the lock cylinder sits in the door handle, a different design
- W202, W140 and all other model series
- Ignition lock cylinder – that is a different part
