Function and location
The glove box lid is the lockable flap of the glove compartment in the dashboard; the grip recess moves the latch via spring and push rod, which the built-in cylinder locks. The second, separate lock cylinder belongs in the front door: the key turns the cylinder core, which carries along the actuating rod on the back via a driver and pushes the locking lever in the door lock open or closed.
The lid sits on the passenger side of the dashboard, the door lock cylinder in the outer skin of the front door as a separate rectangular trim next to the door handle.
How can you tell a latch or door lock cylinder is defective?
- Glove box can no longer be locked or unlocked
- Lid no longer latches cleanly or springs open

The left door lock cylinder carries the number 201 760 05 77 in the parts catalog, meanwhile replaced by 201 760 23 77, and is identifiable by the L marking on the face. The right counterpart carries the number 201 760 06 77.
⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying
This version is intended for the left side (driver's door on left-hand-drive vehicles), identifiable by the L marking on the face of the cylinder. The included keys belong exclusively to these locks and do not match your vehicle's existing lock system; for a matching lock throughout, a locksmith can rekey the cylinders to the existing lock. The parts catalog lists separate numbers per side for the W201, but in practice the cylinders can be swapped between the driver and passenger door – please compare design and marking with the old part.
Does not fit:
- W124 – separate cylinder numbers 124 760 01 77 and 124 760 43 77, right cylinder core only 37.5 mm instead of 44.8 mm
- W123, W126 and R107 – there the lock cylinder sits in the door handle, a different design
- W202, W140 and all other model series
- Glove box lid of the W124 (124 680 15 98) and the W126 (126 680 00 98)
